Sports and Recreation
Committee of the Deaf formed the very first Sport Club
of the Deaf for Soccer in 1976, and since then, a few more
sports clubs had been set up due to high demand and
interest from the Deaf Community.
SRCDeaf currently boasts
badminton, bowling, darts, dragonboat, football, swimming
and track & field practice sessions. Despite the
difficulty in finding volunteer coaches, these teams have
continued to practice and
organise friendly matches on
their own steam. It is inspiring to note their heartfelt
effort in encouraging a healthy and sporty lifestyle among
members.
For the first time, a SRCDeaf team represented Singapore in the Asia
Pacific Games for the Deaf held in Kuala Lumpur. The
team took part in
the track and field and badminton events and the
football tournament. The experience provided the HI
sportsmen and sportswomen greater exposure to better
prepare them for future regional competitions. In
January 1996, SRCD bowling representatives participated
in the World Bowling Championship for the Deaf held in
Taipei. The SRCD dart team played in the Division One
League Tournaments of the Singapore Dart Association.
SRCDeaf is taking a new and active role in encouraging hearing-impaired
members to take part in the annual National Disability
Games and other
local competitions. Participation in these events will
inspire them to excel in sports and give them a platform
from where they can aim to participate in the Asia
Pacific Games for the Deaf and Deaflympics. |
