Sports &
Recreation Committee of the Deaf (SRCDeaf) organized the
very first Deaf Futsal Championship at Hougang Sports Hall
on
18 September 2005. The
aim of the event was to promote, through sports, the
well-being of the deaf in Singapore, helping them to live
full and independent.
This was the very first sports event in SRCDeaf since 1974.
It received overwhelming responses from 5 Malaysian states:
Kedah, Penang, Kelantan, Johor and Pahang. Their
participation in the Futsal Championship attracted the four
local deaf teams. The turnout for this event was 200. Four
teams in Group A and five teams in Group B competed in the
Championship.
At the beginning of the Championship, a huge event banner
was hung high up together with a few state flags of
Malaysia. The spirit of
courage and determination to succeed among the deaf players
were in the air. The boys donned national colours with pride
by displaying their skills in front of their friends,
supporters and guests. To quench their thirst, they were
served the NEWater in every match. They were also given
goodie bags containing souvenir booklet, t-shirt, towel and
empty water bottle.
The Championship was indeed a remarkable and most thrilling
experience for everyone. The semi-final and final matches
drew louder cheers from the supporters, friends and
strangers. They witnessed the Singapore A team enter the
semi-final and final respectively for the first time. The
Singapore A team beat Penang 2-0 in semi-final match and
then went on to beat Kedah 1-0 to emerge as the overall
Champion. It was the very
first time that the deaf team, Singapore A won the
Championship at our home ground. Their victory prompted
Channelnewsasia (CNA) to feature the Championship “live” on
TV news and appeared in the CNA article online.
The Chairman and the Organising Committee wish to thank all
our guests, sponsors, participants, volunteers and officials
