On 9 August 1974, in conjunction with the National Day Celebration, the club was inaugurated on the grounds of the Canossian Oral School for the Deaf in Jurong. In 1978, it was named ‘Youth Group for the Deaf’ which was later renamed as Social Group for the Deaf in 1978 to cater to all Deaf members regardless of age, race, religion and educational background. Instead of remaining in the world of silence and solitude, a small group of deaf members were encouraged to share their wide spectrum of experiences and skills through this club and develop leadership qualities and nurture the potential, talent and community spirit of the Deaf. With confidence, they worked hard towards the goal of establishing the deaf club and to provide more social activities and programmes.

22 years later, the Social Group for the Deaf was renamed ‘Sports and Recreation Committee of the Deaf’ (SRCDeaf) in 1996. The main reason for the change of name was to join Comite International des Sports Sourds (International Committee of the Sports for the Deaf) as an ordinary member. SRCDeaf works closely with the Singapore Association for the Deaf and Singapore Disability Sports Council in order to realize its objectives of promoting and organizing sports and recreational activities among the Deaf in Singapore.

On 21 July 2001 at the 37th CISS Congress in Rome, SRCDeaf became an ordinary member of CISS. They sent a squad of national deaf sports athletes to Asia Pacific Games for the Deaf and Deaflympics events. (See the picture on the right)
